Sarah C. Mowery

Apr 24, 2019

Sarah Nell Colburn Mowery passed away on April 24th , 2019 at the age of 88. Sarah was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1930. She spent her early years helping at her mother's boarding house with her beloved brother Frank. She married Henry Lee Mowery in 1947 and they had four children: William, susan, Ted and Edwin. The family moved to South Florida in 1959 where Sarah worked for the Broward County School Board for 38 years.

Sarah was the first person in her family to graduate with a Bachelor's degree. She began her career as an educator in 1966, teaching in Broward's Special Education program. Her first classes were held at Provident Hospital on Sistrunk Boulevard and in bunkers off of Broward Boulevard.

Sarah eventually earned a Master's degree while with the Browad County School Board and became the Director of Personnel Policies and Procedures, a job she loved passionately. She helped shape policy and signed the hiring paperwork, insurance forms and payroll for more than 30,000 employees. By the late 1970's, her fingerprints had worn off from handling so many papers.

Sarah spent her retirement teaching GED classes, counseling and supporting her extended family and reading. She believed, as Cicero said, "Read at every wait; read at all hours; read within leisure; read in times of labor; read as one goes in; read as one goes out. The task of the educated mind is simply put: read to lead."

Sarah is survived by her children William (Lindsay), Susan, and Ted (Lisa)  Mowery; grandchildren; great-grandchildren,
nieces and nephews, and many beloved friends. She is pre-deceased by her parents Huey Colburn and Gladys Jenkins; her husband Henry Lee Mowery; her son Edwin Mowery; and her brother Frank Jenkins.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00pm, Saturday, May 25th 2019 at Pompano Beach First Baptist Church, 138 NE First Street, Pompano Beach, Florida 33360. A repast will be held immediately following in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude  Children's Hospital or The Carter Center
