Gretchen Lynn Hasselkus
Gretchen Lynn Hasselkus, age 72, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2017 at her home in Fort Lauderdale surround by her family. Gretchen was born in Toledo, Ohio to Russell and Norma Jeanne. At age 17, she moved to New York City where she waitressed and held positions as a secretary. She took a position at Merrill Lynch, working her way up to Assistant Vice President. She moved to AT&T International as Vice President for human resources to build the new international company, getting a chance to travel around the world. Gretchen earned a Bachelor of Science from Empire State College, State University of New York, and a Master of Science from Nova Southeastern University.
Gretchen found her true calling helping those in need. She transitioned to a career in drug and alcoholism counselling, specializing in treating adolescents, becoming a New York State credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor in the East Hampton area of New York’s Long Island. Gretchen moved to Fort Lauderdale to continue counseling. After suffering a debilitating back injury, she continued her service to the community in spite of her pain and suffering. She was active in Gay and Lesbian community serving as Pride Fest board member and earning a distinguished service award from the Dolphin Democratic Club. She served as a board member for Center One. Those who knew Gretchen knew the love in her heart.
Gretchen is survived by her dear dogs Michael and Babygirl, her devoted niece Cynthia (James) Hasselkus-Light of Madison, WI, brother George Christopher (Hope) Hasselkus of Ocala, FL, grand-niece Kira Sue Light, niece Debbie (John), nephews Rick (Tina) and Chris, and six additional grandnieces/nephews, as well as her Aunt Martha and cousins.
