Beatrice Ann Engels

Beatrice Ann Engels (nee Jonap) of Lauderdale by the Sea, FL, devoted wife, mother and friend, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2018 from congestive heart failure. She was 92 years old. Beatrice “Bea” was a successful realtor in Blue Point, NY, published poet, a long-time member of the board for her condominium association, artist and most importantly, a loving mother. She is survived by her two children, Edward Engels, of Throggs Neck, NY, and Marguerite McHale (Robert) of Berkeley Heights, NJ. She is also survived by her three grandchildren, Robert McHale and his wife Brittany of Hoboken, NJ, Emily McHale, New York, NY and Rebecca Engels, Pompano Beach, Florida. She is pre-deceased by her husband of 53 years, James and her son, James Jr.

Beatrice was one of two children of the late Marguerite Carroll Jonap and Sydney Jonap of New York. She attended Hunter High School and Hunter College in Manhattan. She was a well-known realtor on Long Island and her company was based in Patchogue, NY. She was a featured writer for the Suffolk County News and the Long Island Advance. She also received many awards for her poetry which was published in several anthologies. Bea was known for her quick wit and a champion for many civic causes including environmental issues. She was successful in preserving the wetlands located on the border of Bayport-Blue Point, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Assumption Church on Friday, March 23 at 10:30 AM in Lauderdale by the Sea, Fl. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Catholic Hospice, 14875 NW 77th Avenue, Suite 100, Miami Lakes, Florida 33014 or Catholic Charities (catholiccharitiesusa.org).
